MEDIA RELEASE: Books in Homes Australia to partner with the GIANTS to share the importance of reading and literacy

    Feb 15, 2019 0

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    15 February 2019

Books in Homes Australia is delighted to announce its new partnership with Australian Football League (AFL) club—the Greater Western Sydney Giants (GIANTS). The GIANTS work with community partners and charities as part of their social responsibility initiatives within Western Sydney, the ACT, Southern NSW and broader communities. Within this context, Books in Homes will work within the GIANTS communities to share the importance of reading and literacy, while identifying the schools with the greatest need for books.

Books in Homes Australia is a charitable foundation that provides books-of-choice to children living in remote, disadvantaged and low socio-economic circumstances, ensuring crucial early literacy engagement and the development of reading skills needed for lifelong achievement. The program aims to overcome the inequality of educational opportunities in communities where access to books for families is limited or non-existent and resources are often scarce. In doing so, the program contributes to helping overcome generational poverty by enhancing the chances of success in early education thereby opening up options, choices and potential in later life. Since 2001, Books in Homes has distributed over 2.5 million new books to children through schools and communities around Australia.

Books in Homes Australia’s vision is to create an Australia where every child and family has access to books in the home, and one of the areas where this focus is needed is the Western and South Western suburbs of Sydney.

Peter Large, CEO from Books in Homes Australia, said, “Books in Homes is partnering with the GIANTS with a common cause for the Western Sydney region. We have worked with members of the GIANTS Community team for several years now and we greatly value the work they do in reaching, supporting and encouraging youth from the many diverse backgrounds in Western and South Western Sydney. Books in Homes has had many years’ experience in promoting literacy and reading in Western Sydney. Our partnership aspires to deliver a powerful and exciting future for the families of the supporter base of the GIANTS and Western Sydney children.

The partnership will have its first public appearance at the GIANTS Fan Day, which will be held on Saturday 16 February 2019 from 3:00 to 5:00pm at Blacktown International Sports Park, Eastern Road, Rooty Hill NSW 2766. Books in Homes will hold live readings and storytelling sessions for children at its stand, featuring some of Australia’s finest children’s authors, illustrators, as well as Storyville storytellers.
